Former world number nine Roberto Bautista Agut of Castellon de la Plana, Spain has announced his intention to retire from professional tennis at the end of 2026 according to www.atptour.com on Wednesday. Bautista Agut has been dealing with a “persistent leg injury.”
The injury reportedly happened in the first round of the 2025 United States Open in September. In his first round match, Bautista Agut lost 7-5, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 to Jacob Fearnley of Great Britain. The injury prevented Bautista Agut from competing during the fall season and we did not see him again until January when he competed at the ASB Classic in Auckland.
It should be known that Bautista Agut also broke his leg while horseback riding in 2023. At that time he broke his fibula.
Bautista Agut’s most notable result came in 2019 when he reached the semifinals of Wimbledon. In a rather funny situation, Bautista Agut was expected to have his bachelor party the same weekend of the semifinals and finals of 2019 Wimbledon in Ibiza, Spain. Obviously there was a change of plans, and Bautista Agut’s guests showed up in England.
Twelve times Bautista Agut won an ATP tournament. He won the 2014 Rosmalen Grass Court Championship in the Netherlands, the 2014 Stuttgart Open, the 2016 and 2018 Auckland Open, the 2016 Sofia Open in Bulgaria, the 2017 Chennai Open in India, the 2017 Winston Salem Open in North Carolina, the 2018 Dubai Tennis Championship, the 2019 and 2022 Qatar Open, the 2022 Austrian Open, and the 2024 European Open in Brussels. Bautista Agut was also instrumental in leading Spain to winning the 2019 Davis Cup.
Bautista Agut beat two grand slam champions in ATP Finals. He beat 2021 United States Open champion Daniil Medvedev of Russia 6-3, 6-4 in the 2017 Chennai Open final and 2009 United States Open champion Juan Martin del Porto of Argentina 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 in the 2018 Auckland Open final.
