James McDonald has identified Extragalactic as an emerging Group 1 chance ahead of Sunday’s $2 million Manikato Stakes at Caulfield.
The champion jockey will travel to Melbourne to ride Trent Edmonds’ mare after her enormous closing performance in the Moir Stakes.
Extragalactic finished only fourth at Sandown but recorded the fastest final 800, 600, 400 and 200 metres of the race after settling considerably further back than intended.
The four-year-old has now drawn barrier two for the Manikato, giving McDonald an opportunity to position her closer before asking her to produce the acceleration that made her Moir defeat so encouraging.
McDonald Booking Strengthens Extragalactic’s Chances
McDonald’s decision to ride Extragalactic provides Edmonds with an important advantage in an open weight-for-age sprint.
The record-breaking jockey does not guarantee victory, but his judgement of speed and ability to navigate inside barriers could prove particularly valuable.
Extragalactic cannot afford to reproduce the beginning that left her near the rear of the Moir field.
She was crowded between runners shortly after jumping and settled further from the leaders than jockey Blake Shinn had intended.
The race then developed against her.
My Gladiola and the other prominent runners controlled the contest near the speed, leaving Extragalactic required to produce an exceptional closing performance merely to enter the placings.
She failed to catch My Gladiola, Cavalry Girl and Natural Fling, but her sectional times demonstrated that the finishing position did not accurately reflect the quality of her performance.
McDonald must now convert that hidden merit into a more favourable Manikato run.
Barrier Two Creates Opportunity and Risk
The inside draw should allow Extragalactic to settle closer over 1200 metres.
McDonald can encourage her to begin cleanly, hold a position behind the leaders and avoid conceding the field the enormous start she faced at Sandown.
That would leave the mare within striking distance approaching the home turn.
However, barrier two is not an automatic advantage.
Extragalactic will need clear running room when the race begins to accelerate. If she becomes trapped behind weakening leaders, McDonald may be forced to wait while rivals build momentum around her.
The challenge is finding the balance between protecting ground and preserving an escape route.
A midfield position with cover would appear ideal.
Extragalactic possesses enough acceleration to take advantage of a late opening, but expecting her to repeatedly overcome traffic against Group 1 opposition would be dangerous.
McDonald’s presence becomes particularly valuable under those circumstances.
Few jockeys make better decisions when required to assess whether to remain inside or shift wider before the field reaches maximum pressure.
Moir Run Confirmed Her Group 1 Ability
Extragalactic entered the Moir without a previous Group 1 victory, but she was not an unproven outsider.
She had finished second by a nose to Desert Lightning in The Goodwood at Morphettville during the autumn.
That performance established her ability to compete against older sprinters at the highest level.
The Moir provided another test because she resumed over 1000 metres against horses possessing greater tactical speed.
Her finishing sectionals confirmed she had returned in excellent condition.
Extragalactic produced the fastest closing splits across each of the final four sectional measurements despite being forced to chase from the rear.
The additional 200 metres in the Manikato should suit her.
She will have more time to find her rhythm and should not be as dependent upon matching the explosive early speed required in a 1000-metre sprint.
The major question is whether she can produce the same finish after being asked to hold a closer position.
Some backmarkers record exceptional sectionals partly because they conserve energy during the early stages while the leaders compete for position.
Extragalactic must prove she can race nearer the speed without weakening her greatest weapon.
Edmonds Believed She Had Improved
Edmonds entered the spring convinced his mare had developed physically and mentally.
“I think she’s going better and I couldn’t have her any better for a first-up effort—she’s really on song and she’s right in the spot,” he said before the Moir.
“I’m really confident that I’ve got the right horse going there and she’s in the right space.”
Those comments were supported by her performance.
Extragalactic did not win, but she demonstrated that she had returned capable of producing Group 1-standard closing speed.
She has finished outside the top two only twice across her first eight starts, with both defeats occurring in elite company.
That consistency explains why McDonald was willing to accept the Manikato ride despite the race containing several proven Group 1 winners.
Extragalactic is not merely an improving mare receiving speculative support because of her jockey.
Her recent performances justify her place in the market.
One $160,000 Bid Could Transform Edmonds’ Stable
Extragalactic has already become the most important horse in Edmonds’ solo training career.
The trainer purchased the daughter of Deep Field for $160,000 at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
She was the only yearling he bought at the sale.
Edmonds later revealed that the filly had initially attracted limited interest from potential owners, creating uncertainty about whether he could syndicate her.
His judgement has been vindicated.
Extragalactic has developed from an athletic but relatively inexpensive yearling into a multiple city winner, Group 1 placegetter and genuine Manikato contender.
A victory on Sunday would deliver Edmonds his first solo stakes success and immediately increase the mare’s breeding value.
The trainer previously shared more than 350 winners with his father Toby, including Tyzone’s victory in the 2020 Stradbroke Handicap.
He subsequently established his own operation at Pakenham and has attempted to rebuild his stable within Victoria’s highly competitive training environment.
Extragalactic can provide the breakthrough required to attract more owners and better young horses.
Beiwacht Sets a Different Challenge
Extragalactic will confront a considerably deeper field than the one she faced in the Moir.
Beiwacht has been installed as the early favourite after resuming with a commanding three-length victory in the Memsie Stakes over 1400 metres.
The Chris Waller-trained four-year-old will drop back to 1200 metres and has drawn barrier three.
That creates an intriguing tactical comparison.
Beiwacht possesses the ability to settle close to the speed and control his position, while Extragalactic is likely to be ridden more patiently directly inside him.
McDonald cannot allow Beiwacht to establish an uncontested advantage.
If the favourite settles ahead of Extragalactic and accelerates into clear running room first, she may be forced to chase a horse with superior momentum.
The distance change presents another uncertainty.
Beiwacht’s Memsie performance established his weight-for-age quality, but dropping from 1400 to 1200 metres requires greater early speed.
Extragalactic is moving in the opposite direction after contesting the 1000-metre Moir.
The Manikato distance appears closer to her optimum.
Jimmysstar Must Rebound
Jimmysstar adds another powerful finishing threat.
The triple Group 1 winner will wear blinkers for the first time after producing a disappointing ninth in the Memsie Stakes.
Ciaron Maher admitted he remained unable to explain the performance and tested the equipment during a Cranbourne jumpout.
The Sporting Base examined why Maher has turned to blinkers in an attempt to revive Jimmysstar.
Jimmysstar has drawn barrier eight, allowing Ethan Brown to remain away from potential traffic before attempting to build momentum around the field.
That may give him a cleaner run than Extragalactic receives from barrier two.
However, Extragalactic enters the race with considerably stronger recent form.
Her Moir performance proved she has returned near her best, while Jimmysstar must demonstrate that his Memsie failure was an isolated result.
My Gladiola Brings the Winning Form
Moir Stakes winner My Gladiola deserves greater respect than her early market position may suggest.
The mare controlled the Sandown sprint from a favourable position and continued strongly enough to withstand the challengers.
Extragalactic’s faster closing sectionals do not prove she would have won with a better start.
My Gladiola had already completed the work required to secure her position near the lead and responded when placed under pressure.
She has drawn barrier nine in the Manikato, creating a more difficult tactical assignment for Jamie Mott.
Extragalactic has gained the more favourable barrier and an additional 200 metres, giving her a realistic opportunity to reverse the result.
She still needs to do it.
Giga Kick, defending champion Charm Stone, Oliveanotherday, Napoleonic, Geegees Mistruth and Rothfire provide further depth to a field carrying considerably more Group 1 experience than Extragalactic.
Extragalactic Must Convert Promise Into Victory
The Manikato represents the most important race of Extragalactic’s career.
She has twice demonstrated that she belongs at Group 1 level without securing the victory capable of permanently changing her reputation and value.
Her Goodwood defeat was decided by a nose.
Her Moir performance contained significantly more merit than fourth place suggests.
Those results establish her credentials but also create a challenge.
At some point, an emerging horse must stop being praised for unlucky or eye-catching defeats and convert its ability into a major victory.
Barrier two, 1200 metres and McDonald provide Extragalactic with the conditions required to make that transition.
The champion jockey’s booking will inevitably shorten her price and increase expectations.
It will not remove the tactical risks or the quality of her opposition.
Extragalactic possesses the closing speed required to win the Manikato.
McDonald’s task is to ensure she is close enough—and clear enough—to use it.
