Racing: Cosmic Crusader Wins Turnbull Stakes for Leek and Pike

Cosmic Crusader broke through for a maiden Group 1 victory in the TAB Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Saturday, powering past tearaway leader Light Infantry Man in the straight for trainer Andrea Leek and jockey William Pike. Aeliana finished third, with favourite Sir Delius fourth, as the West Australian star relished the rain-affected Flemington surface.

According to Just Horse Racing, Cosmic Crusader ($7.50) settled behind the speed while Light Infantry Man opened a sizeable lead and Sir Delius raced in second. Pike improved approaching the home turn, took over at about the 150m and powered clear for the win — Pike’s 19th Group 1 and a major career milestone for Andrea Leek, who Racenet reported as collecting her first Group 1 success.

How the Turnbull unfolded

Just Horse Racing reported Light Infantry Man ensured a genuine staying test through the middle stages on the wet track. Cosmic Crusader, placing in both the Memsie Stakes and Underwood Stakes earlier this preparation, stepped up to 2000m and handled the conditions to claim one of the Melbourne Spring Carnival’s feature races. Aeliana filled third ahead of the favourite Sir Delius, who jumped at $3.10 with Sportsbet according to SENTrack / RSN.

Racenet described Cosmic Crusader as a six-year-old gelding by Maurice whose Turnbull success was his 11th win from 22 starts, taking earnings past $2.5 million. Breednet lists the winner as Cosmic Crusader (Maurice x Cosmic Storm).

Pike: “He just relishes a soft surface”

Pike said the gelding had been threatening at the top level throughout the spring campaign.

“He was putting in those good runs without getting the job done, so I think I’d really like to get that done for him,” Pike said, according to Just Horse Racing. “He’s such a gun horse and he just relishes a soft surface as well.”

Pike felt firmer ground may have counted against Cosmic Crusader at his previous start.

“Probably what might have brought us unstuck last time was the firmer deck, so good cut out of it today,” he said. “I don’t think it’s quite as heavy as initially thought. It rode really well and anyway, he loved it.”

Leek and Peters on a first Group 1

Owner Bob Peters said he had been waiting to see Cosmic Crusader over 2000m.

“He’s been running well in all these races, really,” Peters said, per Just Horse Racing. “I’ve been waiting to get him over this distance. I’ve always thought that he would get there, and today he did.”

Leek said she was confident the horse was ready and would handle the wet after heavy trackwork at Pakenham.

“I sent Bob a message this morning and I said there’s no excuses today, he’s spot on, so thank God I was right,” Leek said.

“I’d galloped him one morning at Pakenham, and it was about a Heavy 15,” Leek said. “He went across the top of it like it was a good track, so I was pretty confident he’d handle the wet.”

Spring picture and Flemington card

SENTrack panel commentary after the race flagged a shake-up in Cox Plate markets after Sir Delius finished outside the placings, with Cosmic Crusader shortening sharply in early discussions. Connections have not locked in the next target; Just Horse Racing said they now have several Group 1 options.
