NRL: Kieran Foran Hits Back at Calls for Tom Trbojevic to Retire

1 month ago - Sportingbase NRL: Kieran Foran Hits Back at Calls for Tom Trbojevic to Retire Image
Tom Trbojevic’s latest hamstring injury has again sparked calls for the Manly superstar to consider retirement. However, Sea Eagles coach Kieran Foran believes those reactions ignore the reality of what the fullback can still offer.

Trbojevic suffered a low-grade strain to his right hamstring during Manly’s 38-32 loss to the Gold Coast Titans, forcing him from the field midway through the first half. The injury came only weeks after he returned from a serious problem with his left hamstring.

According to Yahoo Sport Australia, Foran pushed back against suggestions the repeated setbacks meant Trbojevic should walk away from the NRL.

The Manly coach’s argument was simple: Trbojevic remains one of the competition’s most influential players whenever he is healthy, and another injury should not automatically bring his career to an end.

Foran Defends Manly Superstar

The latest setback has intensified debate around Trbojevic’s future after what has reportedly become his ninth hamstring injury in eight seasons.

However, Foran called for greater perspective around the 29-year-old’s situation and rejected the idea that outsiders should be deciding when his career is over.

The former Dally M Medal winner remains contracted to Manly until the end of 2027 and was appointed the club’s captain ahead of the 2026 season.

Foran has also seen first-hand how important Trbojevic remains to the Sea Eagles.

The fullback produced a dominant performance during Foran’s first match in charge, scoring a try and creating another as Manly defeated the Dolphins 52-18. That display offered another reminder of the difference he can make when fit.

Latest Injury Adds to Manly’s Problems

The Sea Eagles confirmed scans had revealed a low-grade right hamstring strain.

Trbojevic has been ruled out of Manly’s clash with Cronulla and will be reassessed following the club’s Round 22 bye. While the Sea Eagles have not ruled him out for the remainder of the season, other reports suggest he could face between four and six weeks on the sidelines.

Lehi Hopoate is expected to move into the fullback role during his absence.

The timing is particularly damaging for Manly, who have slipped outside the top eight following four defeats from their past five matches. Their finals hopes could now depend on whether Trbojevic is able to return before the end of the regular season.

Retirement Debate Isn’t Going Away

Trbojevic’s injury history ensures every setback attracts questions about his future.

Yet Foran’s position is clear. Manly will support its captain through his rehabilitation rather than entertain external calls for him to retire.

For a player capable of changing a match almost single-handedly, the Sea Eagles believe there is still plenty worth fighting for.
