Weekend Preview: What’s On In Sport This Weekend

In this segment, we take a look at the upcoming weekend’s biggest sporting contests.

This weekend holds big contests for Australia, the business end of the NFL, and United’s biggest challenge post-Mourinho.

Australia vs Palestine

The Socceroos will be seeking redemption in their Asian Cup clash with Palestine tonight.

Australia currently sit in last place in Group B, after losing to Jordan in their opening match.

Palestine played to a scoreless draw against Syria in their first outing.

The pressure will be on the Socceroos, who were expected to top the group before their shock loss.

Robbie Kruse will also be feeling the pressure to perform should he play in tonight’s match.

While the target of a lot of online criticism, it is hard to defend him, with his international form being awful, going back to the last World Cup.

Australia managed to have 76% of the possession in their last game, but were left frustrated and scorelees, by a deep-defending Jordan.

Palestine will likely defend in a similar manner, and it’ll be up to Australia’s attack to be able to turn possession into goals.

NFL Divisional Round

This weekend sees knockout action in the NFL.

The Kansas City Chiefs host the Indianapolis Colts in the first match of the round.

The Dallas Cowboys travel to LA to take on the Rams.

Philip Rivers aims to beat Tom Brady for the first time in his career when the Los Angeles Chargers take on the New England Patriots.

Rivers is 0-7 against Brady, but the Chargers look good on paper to get the win.

They’ll have to overcome New England’s home stadium advantage, as well as the possibility of snow, if they wish to progress.

The defending champs, the Philadelphia Eagles, will be looking to overcome the New Orlean Saints.

The Eagles managed to get a one-point away win against the Bears last week, and will be hoping for similar luck this weekend.

Australia vs India

Australia starts it’s trilogy of ODI cricket matches against India on Saturday.

India will be hoping their test form carries over into the limited overs format.

Their test series win against Australia resulted in India becoming the first Asian team to win a Test series in Australia, and they will be confident leading into the weekend’s clash.

Australia will welcome back Peter Siddle into the one day squad for the first time in eight years.

The new-look ODI squad will be hoping to produce better batting displays than Australia’s test squad, who were well-below the standard of India’s batters.

Man Utd vs Tottenham

Manchester United have won every game since axing former manager Jose Mourinho.

In their five matches since parting ways with ‘The Special One’, United have scored a whopping 16 goals, while conceding just 3.

However, they will face their toughest challenge since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge as the caretaker manager, when they play Tottenham Hotspur on the weekend.

Tottenham currently sit in third place in the Premier League, and have won four out of their last five matches.

In their last outing, they beat Chelsea 1-0, in the first leg of their Football League Cup semi-final clash.
