The Portland Trail Blazers will not have Shaedon Sharpe of London, Ontario to start the season. The Canadian shooting guard tore his meniscus during an offseason workout according to Joe Freeman of OregonLive on Thursday.
Sharpe is not expected to return to the Trail Blazers until after the NBA All-Star Game, which will be hosted by the Phoenix Suns this year. Sharpe has a history of injuries. They include a labral tear in his shoulder, abdominal surgery and a stress reaction in his left leg.
In 2025-26, Sharpe had a career year. He averaged 20.8 points per game (the highest average he has had in four NBA seasons). Sharpe also had a career high 1.4 steals per game. Sharpe’s other statistics included a .452 field goal percentage, a .337 three point percentage, a .787 free throw percentage, 4.3 rebounds per game, and 2.6 assists per game.

Now the big question in Portland will be if Sharpe has played his last game with the Trail Blazers. Portland has already committed to the future Hall of Famer Damian Lillard of Oakland, California at shooting guard and has the veteran Jrue Holiday of Chatsworth, California as Sharpe’s backup. Lillard averaged 24.9 points per game in Portland last year at age 35, while Holiday averaged 16.3 points per game in Portland last year also at age 35.
With Ja Morant’s risky acquisition by Portland, the Trail Blazers seem to be set at the guard positions for the 2026-27 NBA season. It would not surprise anyone that Portland tries to trade Sharpe once he is healthy to improve their small forward and center positions.
