Cristian Volpato’s remarkable rise with the Socceroos has been overshadowed after police alleged the 22-year-old tested positive for cocaine following two speeding incidents in Sydney. The Australian international has had his international driver’s licence suspended for six months while police continue their investigation.
The incident comes just weeks after Volpato emerged as one of Australia’s breakout performers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup following his decision to switch his international allegiance from Italy to the Socceroos.
Police Allege Two Speeding Incidents
According to NSW Police, Volpato was first stopped shortly after 11pm on Thursday while driving on Sydney’s Anzac Bridge. Police allege he was travelling between 86km/h and 94km/h in a 60km/h zone.
He underwent a roadside breath test, which returned a negative result, and was issued with a speeding infringement before continuing on his way.
About two hours later, police allege they stopped Volpato again in the same area after he was detected travelling at 109km/h in the 60km/h zone.
During the second stop, officers conducted a roadside drug test which allegedly returned a positive result for cocaine. A secondary oral fluid sample was taken for laboratory analysis, with police confirming inquiries remain ongoing.
Licence Suspended
Following the second incident, Volpato received another speeding infringement and his international driver’s licence was immediately suspended for six months, preventing him from driving in New South Wales.
At this stage, police have not announced any criminal charges relating to the alleged positive roadside drug test, with authorities awaiting the results of the secondary analysis.
World Cup Breakout Star
The allegations come at a difficult time for one of Australian football’s brightest young talents.
Volpato recently represented the Socceroos at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after switching his international allegiance from Italy. The Sydney-born attacking midfielder made three appearances during Australia’s campaign and attracted significant attention with his performances before the Socceroos were eliminated in the Round of 32.
The 22-year-old currently plays for Italian club Sassuolo after previously progressing through Roma’s academy.
Football Australia Yet to Comment
As of Friday afternoon, Football Australia had not publicly commented on the allegations.
The outcome of the secondary drug analysis will determine whether any further action is taken by police, while any football-related disciplinary process would be considered separately under the relevant integrity policies.
