Bjorn Baker believes Warwoven is ready to produce the best performance of his career in the Group 1 Golden Rose at Rosehill.
The Run To The Rose winner will step beyond 1200 metres for the first time when he meets Golden Slipper champion Guest House and a powerful Chris Waller contingent in Saturday’s $1 million feature.
Warwoven has drawn barrier one and will again be ridden by Rachel King, giving the pair an opportunity to secure an economical position near the speed.
Baker’s confidence increased after watching the colt complete his final significant gallop.
“His work on Tuesday was the best we’ve seen from him and he looks absolutely amazing,” Baker said, according to Racenet.
Warwoven Earned His Group 1 Opportunity
Warwoven established himself as a genuine Golden Rose contender by winning the Group 2 Run To The Rose over 1200 metres.
King allowed him to roll forward from barrier seven and settle outside the leader before asking him to accelerate around the turn.
Warwoven responded by defeating the previously unbeaten St Gotthard by a neck, with Under Focus another one-and-a-quarter lengths behind in third.
The victory improved his record to four wins from seven starts and demonstrated his ability to defeat several of the three-year-olds he will meet again in the Golden Rose.
King was particularly impressed by his acceleration and determination.
“He leaves you a bit speechless, his acceleration was unbelievable,” she said following the victory.
Warwoven appeared to switch off after reaching the front but found more when St Gotthard challenged him late.
That quality could become important over 1400 metres.
The colt is not required to sustain a long sprint from the top of the straight. He can travel close to the speed, quicken sharply and respond when another horse approaches.
Barrier One Creates Options and Risks
Warwoven’s inside draw should allow him to conserve energy during his first attempt at 1400 metres.
He possesses sufficient early speed to lead if the pace is slow, but King can also take a trail behind another runner without being forced to cover additional ground.
“Rachel King is riding better than anyone at the moment and from gate one he’s got natural speed, so we’re going to have the option to lead or be right behind the speed,” Baker said.
“I’d back her to make the right decision.”
The barrier is advantageous, but it does not guarantee Warwoven a clear passage.
If King chooses to settle behind the leader, the colt could become trapped along the inside when the field accelerates approaching the home turn.
Guest House encountered a similar problem when resuming in the San Domenico Stakes, although Zac Lloyd eventually guided him through a narrow opening before he raced clear.
Baker accepts Warwoven will require some luck.
“If he gets it from gate one, it is the most economical way home,” he said.
The decision may depend upon which runners attempt to lead.
Plagiarism appears capable of pressing forward, while Warwoven showed in the Run To The Rose that he can race outside the speed without weakening.
King does not need to establish a large lead.
Her priority will be keeping Warwoven relaxed and ensuring he can build momentum before the decisive sprint begins.
The Step to 1400 Metres Should Suit
The Golden Rose distance remains an unknown for Warwoven.
Every one of his seven starts has been contested over 1000 or 1200 metres.
However, his racing style and pedigree give Baker confidence that 1400 metres will suit.
“First-up he had to go back and last time he had to sit outside the leader,” Baker said.
“I think stepping up to 1400 metres really suits.”
Warwoven is by Sword Of State, a fast juvenile who won the Group 1 Sistema Stakes over 1200 metres in New Zealand.
His mother, Needle And Thread, won four races including the Group 2 Royal Stakes over 2000 metres.
That stamina on the maternal side provides some encouragement that Warwoven can extend beyond sprinting distances.
His ability to settle is equally important.
King was able to position him outside the leader in the Run To The Rose without the colt fighting for his head or wasting energy.
A similar performance would give him every chance to run out the additional 200 metres.
The final section of a strongly contested Group 1 race will provide the real answer.
Guest House Presents a Different Challenge
Warwoven finished fifth behind Guest House when both horses resumed in the San Domenico Stakes.
The result does not tell the complete story.
Warwoven settled towards the rear after drawing wide and recorded the fastest final 600 metres of the race in 32.88 seconds.
He made more ground than any other runner while Guest House broke the Rosehill 1100-metre track record.
Warwoven then gained the benefit of another start by winning the Run To The Rose.
Guest House bypassed that traditional lead-up and enters the Golden Rose four weeks after his record-breaking return.
That creates an intriguing contrast.
Guest House may possess greater natural brilliance, but Warwoven brings the more conventional preparation and has already demonstrated his fitness over 1200 metres.
The favourite must jump directly from 1100 to 1400 metres.
Warwoven only needs to extend another 200 metres after completing a demanding lead-up against high-quality opposition.
Baker acknowledges that defeating the Golden Slipper winner will require a significant performance.
“No doubt Guest House is a superstar horse, but you can’t really worry too much about the others,” he said.
“At the end of the day, I’m really happy with Warwoven.”
Waller’s Five Runners Complicate the Race
Guest House is not the only danger.
Chris Waller has five runners in the 13-horse field, including St Gotthard, Tron Bolt, Campione D’Italia, Stormy Marco and Central Europe.
St Gotthard finished only a neck behind Warwoven in the Run To The Rose and may improve as he steps up to 1400 metres.
James McDonald retains the ride but must negotiate barrier nine.
Tron Bolt won the Group 1 JJ Atkins over 1400 metres as a two-year-old, giving him an important advantage over several rivals tackling the distance for the first time.
He finished seventh when resuming in the Run To The Rose but should improve from that performance.
Campione D’Italia is already a Group 1 winner, while Stormy Marco and Central Europe give Waller further tactical options.
“It’s not just Guest House,” Baker said.
“You’ve got the Waller four or five, including St Gotthard, and Tron Bolt is a really nice horse, amongst others.”
The number of Waller runners does not mean they will operate as a coordinated team, but their different racing patterns could shape the tempo and determine when King can move.
Golden Rose Carries Enormous Stallion Value
The Golden Rose is more than a $1 million race for Warwoven’s connections.
Victory would substantially increase his future value as a stallion.
Recent winners including Zoustar, The Autumn Sun, Bivouac, Ole Kirk and Broadsiding have subsequently received significant opportunities at stud.
Warwoven is already among the leading horses from Sword Of State’s first crop.
A Golden Rose victory would make him his sire’s first Group 1 winner and strengthen the commercial appeal of the entire family.
“He’s obviously a colt, so there’s a lot riding on it,” Baker said.
The commercial implications cannot be allowed to influence the immediate task.
Warwoven still needs to prove he can defeat elite opposition over a new distance.
However, his achievements have already exceeded those of an ordinary three-year-old.
He won the Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes as a juvenile and has returned stronger to claim the Run To The Rose.
The Golden Rose will determine whether he can convert that promise into a Group 1 victory.
Warwoven Has Been Given Every Opportunity
Guest House deserves his position as favourite after winning the Golden Slipper and producing a spectacular first-up performance.
Warwoven should not be treated merely as the colt most likely to chase him home.
He brings proven lead-up form, an ideal barrier and a jockey who understands precisely how he responds under pressure.
His Tuesday gallop also convinced Baker that he has improved since winning the Run To The Rose.
“It’s been a smooth preparation and he looks great,” Baker said.
“I’m really confident the 1400 metres will suit him.”
There are still legitimate questions.
Warwoven has never raced beyond 1200 metres, barrier one could become restrictive and Guest House may possess a superior turn of foot.
None of those concerns eliminates his opportunity.
Warwoven has already defeated St Gotthard, handled contrasting racing patterns and demonstrated that he can fight when challenged.
The Golden Rose demands another significant improvement.
Baker believes his colt is ready to produce it.
