Chris Waller believes the barrier draw could determine whether Lady Shenandoah receives a genuine opportunity to justify favouritism in Saturday’s Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield.
The three-time Group 1 winner is preparing to travel south after finishing fourth behind stablemate Autumn Glow in the Winx Stakes at Randwick on August 22.
Lady Shenandoah was beaten 4.3 lengths in that weight-for-age contest, but her performance was considerably better than the margin may suggest.
She settled near the rear of the field and produced an encouraging finish against one of Australia’s best horses without being placed under maximum pressure throughout the final stages.
The Sir Rupert Clarke represents a very different assignment.
Lady Shenandoah will return to handicap conditions over 1400 metres, but the tight Caulfield circuit means her starting position could have an enormous influence upon how much energy she must expend before reaching the home straight.
According to Racenet, Waller is consequently waiting anxiously for Wednesday’s final acceptances and barrier draw.
Lady Shenandoah Needs Room to Build Momentum
Lady Shenandoah possesses enough tactical speed to settle closer than she did in the Winx Stakes, but her best performances have generally come when she has been allowed to establish a rhythm before accelerating.

Waller has repeatedly demonstrated that he can prepare elite mares to win major races from difficult starting positions. Lady Shenandoah herself overcame barrier 11 when winning the 2025 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill.
James McDonald was able to find a midfield position with cover on that occasion, saving enough energy for the filly to withstand Firestorm and Lady Of Camelot late.
Caulfield presents a different challenge because the 1400-metre start provides less time to establish a position before the first turn.
The barrier will not decide the race by itself, but it may determine how many tactical compromises Lady Shenandoah must make.
Winx Stakes Return Was Better Than the Result
Lady Shenandoah entered the Winx Stakes following a break of more than four months.

Lady Shenandoah could not match her stablemate’s acceleration, but she continued to make ground after beginning from a position that made victory extremely difficult.
The effort demonstrated that she had returned in strong condition without requiring Waller to fully expose her so early in the campaign.
She has now had almost four weeks between runs.
That preparation should allow her to improve physically while maintaining the freshness required to produce her best over 1400 metres.
The Sir Rupert Clarke is therefore not simply another lead-up race. Its distance, timing and handicap conditions provide Lady Shenandoah with a realistic opportunity to collect a fourth Group 1 victory.
Handicap Conditions Create a Different Test
Lady Shenandoah competed at level weights with Autumn Glow in the Winx Stakes.
She will not receive the same straightforward conditions at Caulfield.
As a proven three-time Group 1 winner, she must carry a weight reflecting achievements that include victories in the Flight Stakes, Surround Stakes and Coolmore Classic.
Several of her rivals enter the race with considerably less established records and potentially more favourable positions in the handicap.

The race regularly places accomplished weight-for-age horses against emerging gallopers receiving meaningful weight advantages.
Lady Shenandoah’s class makes her the horse to beat, but it does not guarantee that she will receive the most favourable circumstances.
A difficult barrier combined with a substantial weight could force her to produce a performance even better than her current market price implies.
The challenge becomes particularly demanding if she races wide without cover or must begin her run earlier than Waller would prefer.
Deep Field Awaits the Favourite
Lady Shenandoah was listed as the early $4 favourite on Monday, although those prices were available before final acceptances and should be expected to move after the barrier draw.
Angel Capital and Regal Award occupied the second line of betting at approximately $8.50.
Angel Capital finished fourth in the 2025 Sir Rupert Clarke before placing in the C.F. Orr Stakes, Newmarket Handicap and William Reid Stakes.
Those performances demonstrate that he possesses genuine Group 1 ability even though an elite-level victory has continued to elude him.
Defending champion Sepals is also among the leading nominations after finishing second in the Stradbroke Handicap during the winter.
Warnie strengthened his claim by winning the Chautauqua Stakes over 1300 metres at Sandown, while Evaporate enters after scoring over 1500 metres at the same track.
Regal Award, Planet Red, Sabaj, Tom Kitten and Private Eye add further depth to a field containing established performers and progressive runners.
Lady Shenandoah may possess the strongest collection of Group 1 victories, but she will not enjoy an overwhelming class advantage against every opponent.
Caulfield Experience Remains a Question
Lady Shenandoah has built most of her reputation in Sydney.
Her biggest victories have come at Randwick and Rosehill, where longer home straights have given her more time to produce sustained acceleration.
Caulfield demands quicker decisions.
Runners can lose their chance before entering the straight if they are trapped behind tiring horses or forced too wide around the turn.
The circuit can reward horses capable of holding a prominent position without using excessive energy.
Lady Shenandoah has enough versatility to cope, but her performance will depend upon how quickly she adapts to the race’s shape.
Waller’s concern about the draw is consequently understandable rather than pessimistic.
He is preparing the favourite and knows she possesses the ability to win.
His uncertainty surrounds whether the barrier will allow that ability to be expressed efficiently.
Sir Rupert Clarke Returns to Traditional Spring Role
The $1 million Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes will be contested over 1400 metres at Caulfield on Saturday, September 19.
Twenty-four horses were nominated, with the field restricted to 16 runners before emergencies.
Final acceptances and barriers are scheduled to be released on Wednesday morning.
The race returned to its traditional September position in 2025 after being conducted later in the spring during the previous two years.
That placement again makes it an important pathway towards races including the Toorak Handicap over 1600 metres.
Sepals won the first edition following the scheduling change, succeeding 2024 champion Kimochi and 2023 winner Magic Time.
The honour roll also contains outstanding performers including Manikato, Encosta De Lago and dual winner Testa Rossa.
Lady Shenandoah has already demonstrated that she belongs in that level of company.
The question is whether the barrier draw will give her a fair opportunity to add her name to the list.
Draw Could Reshape the Entire Market
Lady Shenandoah deserves to lead the early market based upon her established Group 1 record and encouraging first-up performance.
However, assessing her true chance before the final field is drawn remains difficult.
A favourable gate could allow her to settle within striking distance, conserve energy and challenge at the correct moment.
An extreme outside barrier could force her rider to surrender ground or risk travelling wide.
An inside draw could create its own traffic problems.
The safest conclusion is that Lady Shenandoah possesses the ability required to win the Sir Rupert Clarke, but her price should reflect the route she is likely to receive rather than reputation alone.
Waller has completed the training work.
The mare has returned well, the 1400-metre distance suits and the handicap provides her with another realistic Group 1 opportunity.
One crucial variable remains outside his control.
Before Lady Shenandoah can conquer Caulfield, she must first survive the barrier draw.
