OPINION: Spring Carnival Needs A Revamp

The big question with the Melbourne Spring Carnival having come to an end is whether it is in need of a revamp.

The answer is obviously yes but what is needed and how to do it?

There’s no doubt the Spring Carnival starts too early and goes too long. Starting it in August and finishing it at the end of November is a marathon.

The Zipping Classic Day at Caulfield on Saturday was a success in terms of the crowd and the vibe but in terms of the quality of the fields it wasn’t.

The best place for the Zipping Classic is its traditional date the week after the Flemington carnival has finished.

Maybe the Melbourne Racing Club needs to come up with another feature day for the end of November.

The standalone meetings at Cranbourne and Ballarat worked well but shouldn’t there be come city meeting to keep momentum up instead in November.

How good would it be having a feature night meeting in November at Moonee Valley on a Friday or a Saturday night. Also, one more feature Flemington meeting in November could also work.

Then hand December over to the provincial clubs. The new boss of RV Andrew Jones is looking at every aspect of the carnival so look for changes to happen.
