Cameron Munster has opened negotiations to join expansion side the PNG Chiefs from 2028, after current club Melbourne allowed him to sort out his free agency early.
The Queensland Maroons captain is still contracted with the Storm until at least the end of 2027, and Melbourne is very eager to keep him if he wants to see out his career down south. The club understands he may be chasing one final payday, however, that they can’t front up.

Munster’s agent Braith Anasta, who also hosts NRL360 on Fox Sports, confirmed talks had commenced with the Chiefs today.
“There is a level of interest from PNG,” Anasta said. “We have been in constant communication with Melbourne; Melbourne have the greatest of respect for Cam. We have had some dialogue with PNG but remain completely open to Cameron finishing his career at Melbourne.”
Munster will meet with PNG officials while he’s off with injury. He has around a month before he’s expected back from a knee issue, and will sort out his future in that period. He’s only allowed to speak to the Chiefs.
There’s been no indication that he’ll travel to PNG in that time.
Should PNG sell Munster on a 2028 move, it would then settle the team’s starting halves for their inaugural season: Jarome Luai has already signed, and would play No.7 for the Chiefs with Munster as his five-eighth. Munster could also potentially play fullback, if required.

Munster turns 32 later this year, and would be 33 by the time he fronted up in PNG. He has played 251 games for the Storm since debuting in 2014.
