The New York Knicks made National Basketball Association history on Thursday by delivering the biggest comeback ever in the NBA Finals.
The Knicks were once down by 29 points, (71-42) with two minutes and 51 seconds left in the first half, only to come all the way back. In the last 26 minutes and 51 seconds of game four at Madison Square Garden, the Knicks outscored the San Antonio Spurs 65-35 en route to a 107-106 victory to take a 3-1 series lead in the best out of seven NBA Finals.
The previous record belonged to the Boston Celtics. They were down by 24 points (45-21) in the second quarter to the Los Angeles Lakers on June 12, 2008 in game four of the 2008 NBA Finals, only to win 97-91.
The Knicks win over the Spurs was also the second biggest comeback in the history of the postseason. On April 15, 2019, the Los Angeles Clippers were down by 31 points to the Golden State Warriors only to win 135-131 in game two of the Western Conference quarterfinals.
The Knicks star on Thursday was forward and former Toronto Raptor OG Anunoby of London, England, who had one of the biggest games of his life. He scored 33 points and had the game-winning tip-in with 1.2 seconds left to stamp the iconic comeback. Two more Knicks reached double digits in points. Jalen Brunson of New Brunswick, New Jersey led the Knicks in scoring with 36 points and center Karl-Anthony Towns of Edison, New Jersey recorded the double-double as he had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Game five of the series is Saturday in San Antonio with the Knicks having the opportunity to win their first NBA Finals in 53 years.
