The fact that Jalen Duren is not beginning training camp with the Detroit Pistons should not be that much of a surprise. That is because the Pistons star has been in a contract dispute with Detroit management in the offseason. The one team that has expressed the most interest are the Sacramento Kings.
Training camp is not the only thing that Duren does not plan to attend. He does not plan to attend media day either in Detroit.
Duren has turned down a five-year contract worth $200 million. There are now reports according to Eli Gregorski of Heavy that Duren could sign a one-year contract worth $9.6 million. The fact Duren could be making $10.4 million less in 2026-27 than what he was initially offered for the 2026-27 season is extraordinary.
The reason why Duren is turning down this sizeable amount this season, is because he is hoping to earn a considerable amount more than $40 million starting in 2027-28. There are 10 players in the NBA set to make $60 million or more beginning next season.
It appears Duren will start the season in Detroit. But it is becoming more likely that it will be a one-year contract than a long term contract extension.
This past season, Duren averaged 19.5 points per game, 10.5 rebounds per game and two assists per game. The first time All-Star had a field goal percentage of .650 and a free throw percentage of .747. The Pistons first regular season game is on October 20 at home against the Boston Celtics.
