Hill opens talks to quit Magpies after long wellbeing break

Bobby Hill will be sitting down with Collingwood brass this week to figure out his exit from the club, which will see his rich contract (meant to run until 2030) cancelled so that the Norm Smith medallist can hit free agency.

The 26-year-old is signed on around $750,000 a season through to 2030, but is now expected to mutually leave the club in the next few weeks.

Hill had originally signed that blockbuster contract in April, but has been on a wellbeing break through most of 2026. Most recently, he turned out in the VFL for three games before taking a break again. Through that time, Collingwood officials have been very supportive.

This week, 7News is reporting that Hill wants to move to a Queensland-based club, though he has also expressed interest in signing with Port Adelaide because the club has a strong Indigenous cohort.

There’s been no suggestions that he’s formally spoken to any teams yet, though that will change this week after these Collingwood conversations.

The Magpies are expected to grant Hill the exit he wants, with no catch.

For Collingwood, the upside comes from having $750,000 a season to spend on another star player for 2027 through to 2030. Hill was incredible in black and white, famously helping the club to its 2023 premiership, but without him playing, the money is largely going to waste on the cap.

A month ago, Hill said he was “truthfully, battling” and still felt a long way away from actually playing in the AFL again.

“I had a really good chat with Bobby… over the last period — he has a bit going on, let’s be really clear. He has a lot going on,” coach Craig McRae said at the time.

“He’s a work in progress, but it’s nice to have him in the building. He’s a long way away… but again, when he’s in our building, at least we get some opportunities to make him feel he’s loved and appreciated. That will never waver, and I’m chatting to him, having really deep conversations.”

Collingwood are currently running eighth with a 10–7–1 record.
