There was a marathon match at the 2026 United States Open on Monday, In the fourth longest match in the history of the tournament, Botic van de Zandschulp of Wageningen, Netherlands defeated Arthur Gea of Carpentras, France by a score of 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 in five hours and 13 minutes.
This was a rare fourth round match of unseeded players. Van de Zandschulp is ranked 70th in the world and Gea is ranked 87th in the world.
Gea had been a significant story at the 2026 United States Open. He was a lucky loser and only reached the US Open men’s singles draw because Norwegian grand slam finalist Casper Ruud withdrew with a back injury.
In the fourth round match at the Grandstand Court, van de Zandschulp had the service statistical advantage. Van de Zandschulp had 15 aces and nine double faults and Gea had 10 aces and 12 double faults.
The longest United States Open men’s singles match was on August 27, 2024 as Dan Evans of Great Britain defeated Karen Khachanov of Russia in the first round by a score of 6-7, 7-6, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 in five hours and 35 minutes. The second longest US Open men’s singles match was the 1992 semifinal where Stefan Edberg of Sweden defeated Michael Chang of the United States 6-7, 7-5, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 in five hours and 26 minutes. The third longest US Open men’s singles match was the 2022 quarterfinal where Carlos Alcaraz of Spain beat Jannik Sinner of Italy, 6-3, 6-7, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3 in five hours and 15 minutes.
The match between van de Zandschulp also set the record for the most points at a US Open match with 409. Edberg and Chang had the old record of 404. Next up for van de Zandschulp is the first seed and French Open champion Alexander Zverev of Germany in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
