BEGG’S STRAIGHT THEORY PAYS OFF WITH DE BERGERAC

GRAHAME Begg’s meticulous attention to detail noted the leading stallion Zoustar’s progeny had an affinity to the Flemington straight and his sprinter De Bergerac proved another worthy example on Saturday.

De Bergerac recorded his third win down the Flemington straight to accompany his four placings when he took out the Brian Beattie Handicap (1100m).

“He loves the straight and the Zoustars love it,” Begg proclaimed after De Bergerac produced a withering late burst for a comfortable win.

He then explained his theory regarding the Zoustar’s and the Flemington straight.

“I identified that ages ago that the Zoustars really excel up the straight. They are prolific straight horses,” Begg said.

He pointed out that Northern Meteor, who is the sire of Zoustar., won the Coolmore Stakes.

“Zoustar himself loved the straight and De Bergerac’s full sister C’est Magique ran second in the Coolmore up the straight.”

Begg said De Bergerac had the talent to also measure up to top class in the future.

He will have his next start in the Santa Ana Lane Series Final (1200m) at Flemington on July 4.

He will then tackle the Aurie’s Star Stakes in August before possibly progressing to the G2 sprints, the Bobbie Lewis Stakes in September and the G2 Gilgai Stakes in October, with all races held over 1200m at Flemington.

Begg said De Bergerac was perfectly ridden by Daniel Stackhouse who bided his time on the sprinter.

Begg also trained fifth placegetter Royal Insignia, who is De Bergerac’s younger half brother and Samangu who finished sixth.

Stackhouse rode a winning double as he earlier won on I’mateez. Former Tasmanian apprentices Jabez Johnstone and Jackson Radley also rode winning doubles.

Johnstone won on Decalogue and Ten Commandments for Ciaron Maher and Radley scored for the Hayes brothers on Stylish and Seafall.
