The Newcastle Knights have shown breakout back David Armstrong the door just weeks after re-signing him, with the 23-year-old now set to join the Leigh Leopards heading into next season.

Armstrong had agreed to re-sign with the club after turning down the Sydney Roosters, only to have a change of heart in the cooling-off period.

The 23-year-old’s management began scouting out new locations for the fullback-cross-back to head and he was quickly approached by the Leopards. While Adam O’Brien and the Knights originally wanted to keep Armstrong, the way he handled the situation has now seen them happy to let him leave as soon as possible.

“Newcastle Knights have decided they will not stand in the way of David Armstrong accepting an offer to join the Leigh Leopards at the end of the 2024 season,” a club statement released today reads.

“Armstrong will play for the Knights for the remainder of the year, and we look forward to David continuing his strong form for the club.”

There was some small interest from the Roosters after Armstrong declared he was going to turn down the already-signed Newcastle deal he had inked up in May, but the tricolours quickly backed out of any secondary talks after Trent Robinson stepped in to say no.

Armstrong has been playing for the Knights in the NSW Cup competition these last few weeks, having been kept out of the NRL by another boom rookie in the shape of Fletcher Sharpe.
